ARTISTS’ LEGACIES – A BLESSING OR A CURSE? HOW TO TREAT OUR CULTURAL MEMENTOS

An event organized by the Rheinisches Archive fuer Kuenstlernachlaesse (RAK) in cooperation with the Museum Kurhaus Kleve (the museum of the spa center of Kleve)

Topic and list of participants

What do we have to watch for when we consider the future of art works of historical importance? How does one protect the body of an oeuvre when the atelier is being dismantled? How does one responsibly work with the biographical legacy? How can one guaranty the permanence of public access for researchers and the general public to important source documents and art works? On Saturday, October 2nd, 2010, all these questions concerning the treatment of our cultural mementos, were the central theme of a lecture event at the Museum Kurhaus Kleve.

Three institutions are planning to present examples of their work, therewith throwing light on the various aspects of the practical handling of artistic legacies in museums, archives and collections: the Rheinisches Archiv fuer Kuenstlernachlaesse (RAK), the Archiv fuer Kuenstlernachlaesse der Stiftung Kunstfonds (archive for artists’ legacies of the Foundation Kunstfonds) and the Museum Kurhaus Kleve itself. The RAK will present a special show of some of the rare archivalia in their collection.

The speakers were:
